An Amtrak train heading to Chicago derailed shortly after midnight Monday, sending 32 people to local hospitals, according to the rail agency.
The train was an Amtrak Southwest Chief, part of a route that winds through eight states as it travels between Los Angeles and Chicago. This particular train had left Los Angeles and was about 20 miles west of Dodge City, Kan., when eight of the train’s nine cars derailed just after midnight local time.
There were 145 people on board — 131 of them passengers — when the trail derailed in southwest Kansas and cars careened off the tracks.
