COSTA MESA – More than 280 students from four Orange County elementary schools were ready for their close-ups.
Kids from Garden Grove to San Juan Capistrano, most of whom had never been on stage 17 weeks ago, got the chance to tread the boards at Segerstrom Concert Hall on Tuesday.
Students from each school did a selection of numbers to wrap up the second year of the Disney Musicals in Schools program.
They were kids like Sabrina Nguyen, a sixth-grader at Ethan B. Allen Elementary School in Fountain Valley, who had to choose between being part of an academic pentathlon team or playing Rafiki in a segment from “The Lion King,” as her first foray into acting. She has since earned a spot in the competitive Arts Express Camp at Vanguard University this summer.
Or sixth-grader and football player Jason Bruce, who traded in his shoulder pads for a monkey suit as King Louie in a number from “The Jungle Book” performed by Agnes Ware Stanley Elementary in Garden Grove.
Across the board, students from schools that previously had no theater arts programs got a chance to be in the spotlight at the Student Share Celebration before an appreciative crowd of family and friends who filled four of the five levels at the concert hall.
The performance was a coda to 17 weeks of rehearsals and performances of songs, dance numbers and scenes from Disney musicals under the guidance of artists supplied by the Segerstrom Center for the Arts Education Department, as well as schoolteachers, staff and volunteers.
Third- through sixth-graders from Stanley, Allen, San Juan and Westmont elementary schools participated in this year’s program.
Disney gave a $100,000 grant for the program to provide underrepresented schools with the goal of creating self-sustaining theater programs.
